Tackling Sacroiliac and Pelvic Girdle Dysfunction (SIJ)

This 1-day, live webinar 7.5 hour course provides an excellent foundation for understanding, effectively diagnosing and treating people with sacroiliac dysfunction and pelvic girdle pain. Literature is reviewed and an evidenced based approached is emphasized. Topics include anatomy and biomechanics, diagnosis including special tests literature review, current recommendations, pregnancy and postpartum considerations and interventions. The Pelvic Girdle Musculoskeletal Method ℠ (PGM Method℠), developed by Deborah Riczo, is presented and evidence to support this simplified yet comprehensive approach is reviewed and practiced with dedicated lab time. Specific self-pelvic balancing exercises are introduced and practiced, and patient handouts are included. Course consists of lecture, group discussion/activities, and video (including specific patient video) and is interactive in nature. You will develop quick screening tools that are clinically applicable and a simplified treatment approach for sacroiliac/pelvic girdle dysfunction that can be readily used “on Monday morning” after the course.

#7181 PELVIC GIRDLE/SIJ DYSFUNCTION: A NOVEL APPROACH

This course will give you a streamlined approach to address pelvic girdle pain, which includes sacroiliac pain. You will leave the course with an update on the current literature including special tests and their recommended utility, an anatomy review of the pelvic girdle and the important dynamics involved, and a novel simplified approach to treating this complex area. This approach, The Pelvic Girdle Musculoskeletal Method (PGM Method SM), was developed by Deborah B. Riczo, and has been taught to physical therapy professionals on an international level, first courses in 2011. This approach is the basis of both of her books, “Sacroiliac Pain,” and “Back & Pelvic Girdle Pain in Pregnancy & Postpartum. Both assessment and interventions of the PGM Method will be introduced, and you will be able to implement them on Monday morning.

#7466 Tackling Breast Cancer Rehabilitation: Addressing Dysfunctions

Rehab professionals are often treating someone with breast cancer as either a primary or secondary diagnosis. Many therapists have not had formal education on the various diagnoses and treatments for breast cancer and breast cancer reconstruction, and do not feel comfortable evaluating a patient with breast cancer and are unsure of prescribing exercise. This course will review relevant anatomy, surgical/adjuvant treatment and literature. This will enable a therapist to better assess the impairments and design an appropriate plan of care that will make a difference in the quality of life for the person with breast cancer. Emphasis will be placed on knowing when to refer to a breast cancer/ lymphedema trained specialist.

#7480 Prenatal and Postpartum Rehabilitation

Low back and pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy and postpartum are common global problems, affecting approximately 45% of all pregnant women. Women can be well served by their physical therapist who is knowledgeable regarding common symptoms and impairments and who utilize an evidenced based approach when developing their plan of care. Musculoskeletal dysfunction reviewed includes: postural, round ligament pain, diastasis rectus abdominus (DRA), pelvic floor dysfunction, pubic symphysis dysfunction, sacroiliac dysfunction, piriformis syndrome, transient osteoporosis and coccydynia. Current exercise guidelines will be reviewed. (Intermediate)

Pregnancy & Postpartum Rehab Course

Description

Low back and pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy and afterward are common global problems, affecting approximately 45% of all pregnant women.  This course provides the knowledge needed regarding common symptoms and impairments found in this population as well as provides an evidence-based approach for treatment.  Common symptoms and impairments discussed include: postural, round ligament, diastasis rectus abdominus (DRA), pelvic floor dysfunction, pubic symphysis dysfunction, sacroiliac dysfunction, piriformis syndrome, transient osteoporosis and coccydynia.

Current exercise guidelines and evidenced-based interventions will be reviewed. Detailed case examples will be presented.

Audience:  PT, PTA, OT, OTA & AT and other exercise providers with instructor approval.

At the completion of the seminar, the participant will:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the current literature and best evidence regarding low back and pelvic girdle pain, interventions and predictors of long term disability.

  • Identify cardiovascular considerations during pregnancy and the effect on interventions.

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of common musculoskeletal dysfunction that occurs during pregnancy and postpartum and the anatomical changes that occur.

  • Identify outcome tools to use with this population.

  • Know what are appropriate interventions, including therapeutic exercises and guidelines for exercising during pregnancy.

Your organization can choose the length of this course to fit your needs. Objectives above are for a 4-hour course as described in the PREGNANCY AND POSTPARTUM REHABILITATION BROCHURE.

Core Strengthening From the Inside Out Course

Description

If you are providing exercise instruction you know it is challenging to effectively rehab clients who have very weak core muscles.  This course will review for you the anatomy and kinesiology of the core muscles based on the current evidence, and improve your ability to properly explain and instruct basic core activation to your clients.  In addition, you will be able to recognize compensatory movement patterns and know how to effectively progress core exercises.  Weak core muscles are common in your female clients who are postpartum or who have had children,  those with sacroiliac or pelvic girdle pain, and others with weak core muscles due to abdominal or back surgeries, or obesity.

Audience:  PT, PTA, OT, OTA & AT and other exercise providers.  Arrangements for CEU’s will be made upon request of the organization.

At the completion of the seminar, the participant will:

  • Understand the components of evidence-based core strengthening.

  • Discuss the role of the inner core in core strengthening and know how to activate it properly.

  • Identify abnormal patterning during core exercises and know what muscles are overcompensating.

  • Challenge the core through the appropriate progression of exercises.

  • Address flexibility and strength in the hip in light of the latest research

Your organization can choose the length of this course to fit your needs.  Objectives above 3-hour course as described in the Core Strengthening from the Inside Out Brochure.

Breast cancer rehabilitation course

Description

Breast cancer rehabilitation continuing education courses are not common, yet over 3.1 million women will have a history of breast cancer in 2017.  Recent studies have identified that most cancer survivors are dealing with physical or emotional issues that affect their quality of life which can often be addressed by rehabilitation (Cancer.org).  Less than 30% of survivors have had rehabilitation (Cancer.org). This course will review current literature regarding medical and physical medicine interventions for breast cancer, breast reconstruction and lymphedema. Lab practice will focus on an introduction and practice in the following: girth measurements, simple compression wrapping, home program lymphatic massage, manual therapy, and exercise.

Audience:  PT, PTA, OT and OTA and other providers with instructor approval.  Arrangements for CEU’s will be made upon request of the organization.

OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the basic anatomy of the breast and lymphatic system and the pathology that can occur after the onset of cancer.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the current medical treatment for breast cancer, breast reconstruction and lymphedema.

  • Know current standards of care for the physical medicine treatment of breast cancer, breast reconstruction, and lymphedema.

  • Know appropriate tests and measures for the breast cancer patient with and without lymphedema.

  • Understand and be able to perform simple compression wrapping, teach appropriate post-op breast cancer exercises, lymphatic exercises and home program lymphatic massage.

Your organization can choose the length of this course to fit your needs.  Objectives above are for a 7-hour course as described in the BREAST CANCER BROCHURE
